TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING: EMPOWERING THROUGH KNOWLEDGE

At Kancare, we believe that continuous learning is essential to delivering compassionate and high-quality care. Throughout the month, a series of educational and skill development sessions were conducted for interns, nursing students, nurses, and caregivers, reinforcing our commitment to professional excellence.

a) Expert Session on Palliative Care
Dr. Sooraj conducted an insightful session on "Palliative Care in Head & Neck Cancer" for six nursing students from BCCPN, Aluva. The session enhanced participants' understanding of holistic patient care, symptom management, and the multidisciplinary approach required in palliative care.

b) Dementia Awareness for Social Work Interns
A specialized training session on dementia was organized for social work interns, conducted by Dr. Sooraj, Medical Officer. The session focused on the recognition of dementia, effective communication techniques, behavioural management strategies, and the psychosocial needs of older adults, equipping students with practical knowledge and skills to better support individuals living with dementia.

c) Training by Mrs. Krishna Susheela (Tutor)
Mrs. Krishna Susheela (Tutor) conducted comprehensive training sessions for interns, nurses, and caregivers at Kancare.
For BSW interns, the session focused on Elderly Care and Ageing-Related Issues, offering insights into the physical, psychological, and social aspects of ageing, along with the role of social work in geriatric care.
For nurses and caregivers, regular training was conducted on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) followed at Kancare, aimed at strengthening clinical skills, ensuring quality standards, and promoting safe, compassionate, and person-centred care. These training initiatives continue to enhance the knowledge, confidence, and competence of healthcare professionals and students, contributing to the delivery of exceptional care for every resident at Kancare.

d) Social Work Department: Internship Training
In July 2026, the Social Work Department at Kancare conducted internship training for students from various academic institutions and disciplines. The group included one Psychology graduate, one MSW student from Bharath Mata College, Kakkanad, three MSW students from Jai Bharath College, Perumbavoor, and three BSW students from De Paul College, Kannur.

During the training, students actively participated in resident interactions, psychosocial support, group activities, and multidisciplinary team discussions, gaining valuable hands-on exposure to geriatric and palliative care. At the conclusion of the training, the Social Work Department distributed internship completion certificates, recognizing the students' dedication, commitment, and active participation throughout the period. The department congratulates all the students and wishes them every success in their future academic and professional endeavours.

e) IMAGE Training on Waste Management and Disposal
Kancare organized an IMAGE (Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-Friendly) training session on Biomedical Waste Management and Disposal for nurses and caregivers across both the Kalamassery and Kakkanad centres on 13 and 14 July 2026. The session was conducted by Mr. Suhail, IMAGE Ernakulam District Coordinator.
